Walpole, and the first one was The Castle of Otranto published in 1764. Some basic elements of horror that we wrote in class are: blood, darkness, evil clowns, dark path, lonelyness, mad houses, abandoned houses, murderers, shadows, subtle cold, silence, music, doors, banging, lights, screams, porcellain dolls, eyes, first shots, cementeries, raven, birds, trees, wind, lightning, swings, basement, fire, fog, nightmares, bathtub, corridor, knife, sudden changes of the camera, windows, thrill music, mirrors...
